Mark Vernon is a psychotherapist, writer and teacher. The theme that brings these different interests together is, in a way, the ancient philosophers’ great question: who are we and how do we flourish?
Christianity has rich traditions for engaging the inner life, through this living wisdom has arguably been largely lost since the Reformation, which erased contemplative practices almost overnight. Jung argued that this is the reason psychotherapy evolved, to fill a needed gap.
This day will explore, with talks and discussion, how the older insights might be revitalised by the new. We will consider the sayings of Jesus as practical wisdom, think about the psychology developed by the desert fathers and mothers, and ask how these elements might be integrated now.
